چکیده

It is shown that the electronic friction between a metallic surface and an open-shell atom or molecule moving perpendicularly to it can be substantially enhanced under experimentally interesting conditions, due to the involvement of the Kondo or correlated mixed-valent state. The region of large friction is shifted from the point where the adsorbate resonance crosses the Fermi level to the point where the position-dependent Kondo temperature is of the order of the physical electron-temperature. In addition, there is strong temperature and velocity dependence, along with the breakdown of the local friction approximation. Nevertheless the strong frictions persist for reasonable exper-

Dynamics of charge transfer states on metal surfaces: the competition between reactivity and quenching.

The dynamics of excited states of adsorbates on surfaces caused by charge transfer is studied. Both negative and positive charge transfer processes are possible. In particular we are interested in positive charge transfer from a metal surface to molecular or atomic oxygen adsorbed on the surface. Once the negatively charged oxygen on the surface loses an electron it becomes chemically activated...

Chemically induced charge carrier production and transport in Pd/SiO2/n-Si„111... metal-oxide-semiconductor Schottky diodes

The energy transfer associated with reactions at metal surfaces produces energetic electrons and holes. Using ultrathin films of Pd on metal-semiconductor (MS) and metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) diode structures, we have investigated reaction-induced electrical phenomena associated with a variety of molecular and atomic interactions with the Pd surfaces. Distinct electronic signals are observa...

Photochemistry on metal nanoparticles.

The photochemistry of small molecules on well-defined metal surfaces has been the subject of intense research for more than three decades.1 This field is of interest because it rests on the superposition of two influences. On one hand, new reaction channels can become possible by electronic excitation, which are usually not accessible by thermal activation. On the other hand, compared to molecu...

Core-shell Ag@SiO2@mSiO2 mesoporous nanocarriers for metal-enhanced fluorescence.

A novel mesoporous nanocarrier consisting of a silver core, a silica spacer with controlled thickness and a fluorophores-loaded mesoporous silica shell was fabricated for the metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) and Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) effects.

Electrochemical and photochemical cyclization and cycloreversion of diarylethenes and diarylethene-capped sexithiophene wires.

A combined theoretical and experimental study was performed on diarylethenes and diarylethene-capped sexithiophenes aiming at an improved understanding of the electrochemical and photochemical ring-opening and ring-closing mechanisms. Theoretical calculations, based on DFT and TDDFT, suggested that the spatial distribution and the occupancy of the frontier orbitals determine and control the dia...
